Starting with Bread

February 2026

Currently , our bread  project runs on a two week cycle for each language group. In the first week, we explore the traditional tale of the Little Red Hen; a story with bread, hard work and determination at its core. The children are encouraged to re tell the story using some of their first language, creating their own characters and performing to the group in our very own cardboard puppet theatre. This project provides a safe and comfortable space for children to speak their first language with confidence, which we hope, over time, they will share more widely in other contexts throughout our school.

What a treat! Today, with our Eastern European families we tasted the most amazing chocolate filled croissants, fresh donuts, bread with home made plum jam and Romanian vegetable soup. It was all so very delicious.  A heartfelt thankyou to our families, especially the grownups, mums and grandmas, who came and shared their amazing expertise to support their children and all our learning.

This exciting new project is a collaboration between our artist Jayne , Mr. Biggs our EAL teacher and children/families who speak English as an additional language. The aims of project are as follows:

To encourage and build relationships between families and within different communities through the making and sharing of bread.

To celebrate and promote the multiple heritages of our school, putting parents in a central role as experts in sharing their skills and heritage.

To provide opportunities for children to use their first language and develop translanguaging skills through baking. storytelling and art.

This year long project will culminate in a whole school event; a festival celebrating and sharing  breads from all around the world and showcasing our stories and creative achievements.
